Legal Services Directory of Free and Low Cost Legal Services Now Available Online

"The Legal Services Directory of Free and Low Cost Legal Services" is a comprehensive listing of civil and criminal legal assistance agencies in the Chicagoland area that serve mainly low-income persons, persons with disabilities and senior citizens. Designed for low- to no income persons, this community publication is a valuable resource for those who need legal services, but do not have the means to pay for advice or representation. In the past, the Legal Services Directory of Free and Low Cost Legal Services was available in public libraries, through community service organizations and by purchase. Now, it is available free-of-charge online at www.chicagoappleseed.org.

New Guide Helps Banks Provide Fair and Efficient Services to Growing International Remittance Market

Appleseed released a first-of-its kind guide to assist banks and other financial institutions in better serving the growing remittance market. Immigrants living in the U.S. sent $45 billion to Mexico and Latin America in 2006, according to recent estimates from the Inter-American Development Bank. In addition to providing a detailed market overview, “Banking in a Global Market” offers a comprehensive hands-on approach to setting up transparent and efficient remittance services, drawing on the experiences of large and small financial institutions throughout the U.S.

A Report by Chicago Appleseed Identifies Opportunities for Funding and Engaging Parental Involvement Under NCLB

The logic is simple: Children whose parents are involved in their education do better in school. Today, Chicago Appleseed released a report, The ABC’s of Funding Parental Involvement in Education: Opportunities Under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB or “the Act”) recommending ways for improving collaboration between parents and educators while identifying opportunities for funding parental involvement as mandated in Section 1118 under NCLB.

Appleseed and Chicago Appleseed Release Report Detailing the "Fair Exchange" Pilot Program
October 01, 2006

Appleseed, along with industry leaders GroupEx, Mitchell Bank, Viamericas, Wells Fargo, and other partners announced an important new initiative that provides immigrants who send money to their native countries with clear, up-front information on remittance fees and exchange rates. The project is part of Appleseed's effort to establish a "Fair Exchange" brand, similar to Fair Trade (TM) branded coffee, which would make it easier for consumers to shop for the best remittance deals and reward transparent market players with greater market share.
