Financial Education Brochures in Chicago Public Libraries

caffj no wordsAs a result of our participation in the Money Smart Week Planning Committee, Chicago Appleseed was able to connect with the Chicago Public Library, where our financial education brochures were made available in 28 locations during their Money Smart Week educational events.

The brochures focus on such topics as building and keeping good credit, avoiding predatory lenders, using credit cards, reducing taxes, and owning a home.

Money Smart Week is an annual event sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and aims to educate area residents on a variety of financial access issues. Hundreds of community organizations and financial institutions participate every year.

Civil Liberties Committee Is Looking for New Members

CCL no wordsThe Council's Civil Liberties Committee is looking for new members who want to work on both national and local civil liberties issues. The Committee recently co- sponsored with the American Constitution Society (Chicago chapter) a forum on "Police Oversight in Chicago: Should the Office of Professional Standards be Changed or Replaced." Moderated by former U.S. Attorney Scott Lassar, speakers included Locke Bowman of the MacArthur Justice Center, Craig Futterman of the University of Chicago Law School, and Mara Georges, Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago. More than eighty persons attended this event at which the panelists discussed the pros and cons of a proposed ordinance aimed at reforming the Office of Professional Standards.

The Civil Liberties Committee has sponsored past events on issues including the use of videoconferencing in bail hearings, racial profiling and issues related to the trials of Guantanamo detainees. Policy statements prepared by the Committee can be found on the Council's website.

The Committee, chaired by Gordon Waldron, meets the third Friday of each month at Loop law firm locations. The next meeting of the Committee will be July 20th at noon at Sidley Austin LLP, One South Dearborn Street, 38th floor, Room 38N25. To RSVP, contact Gordon Waldron ahead of time at gordon.waldron@ eeoc.gov or 312-353-7525 to make sure your name is on the attendee list for security.
