IN THE NEWS: An Evaluation of Eileen O’Neill Burke’s First 500 Days as Cook County State’s Attorney

It has been three months since we released 500 Days Forward, 10 Years Back: An Evaluation of Eileen O’Neill Burke’s First 500 Days as Cook County State’s Attorney. A part of our long-standing coverage on the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office (CCSAO), this report focused on the current administration’s policy orientation and our recommendations to reduce harm against Cook County residents. Our reissue of the report, published today, includes corrections based on conversations with the CCSAO to improve its accuracy and accessibility. Since its initial release, the report has sparked wide-ranging discussions on the role of the Cook County State’s Attorney in driving pretrial jailing and removing checks on law enforcement. The report has received a lot of media coverage, some of which you can find below:

For further discussion on the current administration of the CCSAO, join us at 6:00pm on August 19th for a virtual community teach-in hosted alongside MAMAS. We will present findings from the report, hear from individuals directly impacted by Burke’s policies, and answer questions about the CCSAO’s policies. Register here to attend.
